9749 miles away from home: Pursing my dream in the U.S.A.
Dreams do come true. 26 hours of flying, transiting, non stop sleeping and eating, it still took me quite a while to accept that fact that I'm right here in the States. It's been dream to be here since forever and that moment the plane landed in Chicago before flying over to the Washington D.C. ... that feeling is indescribable. Worries of not travelling with someone close or you can depend on, I have it all. but all these discomfort makes people learn, and trust me its the best times ever. Be it good or bad. Despite sitting alone and the long hours of flight, I come to discover the best time I had so far was when I was flying, it was thrilling. Talking to strangers and becoming seat partners as we chatted about our background and destination, learning about different cultures and nationality, conversations I overheard on the plane... if the world was a book, Singapore is barely a sentence. Traveling indeed is the only thing you can buy that makes you richer. I'm so glad I took that step in challenging myself. I never thought this experience will come so early, I always thought I can only do it when I'm 30-ish or something. #dreamcometrue
I cannot believe its one week down in Virginia. Time FLIES. I had such a hard time battling jet lag because I started work the next morning upon my arrival at night and I was constantly yawning around 3-5pm, which is 3-5am back in Singapore, and by dinner time I just knocked out. Its a week and I have finally concurred this jet lag and its Sunday night now, back from exploring areas in D.C today, doing some work from home and also writing before bed and before another week of work on a monday, the only difference is, I don't have a Monday blues because I'm doing what I really love. & if you are ever wondering why I haven't shared anything related to work here at Maggie Austin Cake, be it cakes or working environment, its just because of a NDA that I have signed and this puts them and me in a safe position that we are not letting any information inside out to the public. I would really love to share, but I think I got to be respectful. Getting here isn't easy at all, it took me a lot of time and hard work to build a portfolio to put myself through emails and finally a Skype interview, and finally flying all the way to Washington D.C. it's more than a dream come true. I LOVE every minute of work. I cannot imagine how it would be like on the last day of work...
By the way, if you're curious, Maggie's work place is beautiful. Everywhere is pleasantly looking to the eyes, especially the 'garden' of sugar flowers in her workspace, its like you're constantly surrounded by these beauties Maggie and past interns made. Never felt so comfortable and at ease working and making those sugar flowers, there's no place that feels so much like home. Can I not go back to Singapore?
Georgetown was the first place we explored, it is lovely. The vibe and the atmosphere of this place is just so inviting, or is it just me being bias to heartwarming looking little bricks shophouses queueing up along every street? Kristen (my room mate which we know through 4 months of email exchange and finally intern-ing together at Maggie's) and I would hold our sweet treats and walk down the streets, admiring this little old but charming town. My camera? Always ready in my hands.
It's a good and bad thing I'm unknowingly slipping into mode of comfort - the good is being able to adapt to the place here and the bad is learning stops when you're comfortable. But I'm pretty sure this comfort would not last long because I'm itching to travel out of this place again. Since we stay a river away from D.C., the weekend was spent exploring famous tourists sights like the Lincoln Memorial, Reflecting Pool, National World War II Memorial, which when you look at them from a plan view, are all linked together! Take an afternoon to explore the place and walk around, the view is pretty breath-taking. I can't help myself but to keep thinking I'm stepping on the same ground as Chris Evans when he shot for Cap. A, oh boy, pardon my fan girl mode.
Airbnb was my choice for apartment looking and we are really lucky to find an apartment that is almost just 10 minutes away from everything. D.C is 10 minutes away, so is Georgetown, so is King Street, so is Old Town Alexandria too. The metros makes everything so much easier traveling around, I took the metro from Reagan National Airport, one stop down to Crystal City Station and walked about 15 minutes to look for my apartment, it wasn't all smooth - I think since I have recovered pretty well I can say; I had a BAD fall just 5 minutes away from the apartment, it was raining and dark, and I was dragging my feet after a 26 hours flight. My favourite pair of ripped jeans were ripped even further with blood stains all over it. Thankfully my brothers helped me lugged my luggages all the way from the metro. Number 2, one of my luggages went on to another flight during the transit in Chicago during re-checking in, I guess they just messed it up, and I had to go back to the airport again to collect it when the flight arrived at 10:30pm that night. What a way to start my journey!
All's good now though :)
Oh and one thing that I was really pleasantly taken aback: almost everyday and everywhere; you see people exercising, either running or cycling and there are even bike stations everywhere around D.C. and also Virginia (bicycle-friendly community). We cannot start to look out for the famous Mt. Vernon Trail and start cycling on it! Because it runs across the Reagan National Airport too, I guess it would be great to stop by and watch air planes take off and land. This Fall is weird, it was really sunny yesterday and today its getting so chilly, but I guess I'll embrace the warmth now before october sets in and the weather gets much cooler.
Backpack on. Camera ready. Today morning was spent exploring Eastern Market, Jeremy introduced Ted's Bulletin to me but guess what we have to wait for an hour so we abandoned that idea and went ahead with another pretty decent brunch place too. One thing I am so not used to here - is the tax. Everything is taxed, even when I shop at H&M, got to get used to it! Eastern Market is really near to the Capitol, which I cannot wait to be back to experience the moment I have been waiting for ever since I saw on Nat Geo's IG the super moon rising over the United States Capitol. Made a promise to myself I'll be there and I'll be there on that night!
Trust me I look funny using that selfie camera walking everywhere, but what is a travel trip without leaving memorable memories? Inspired by crazy travellers, (I'm not crazy one but) decided to give it a shot. Mantra behind all of these: YOLO. It sounds cliche, yolo sounds stupid, but honestly, we only have this lifetime to do what we want. I did this video too, so when I look back at it many years down the road, I know I didn't regret a single thing. So, let's just give it our best shot! If anyone has any questions about my trip or anything to take note, I'll be happy to answer your emails :)

For now, I cannot believe I'm blogging from my little apartment in Virginia now :') #eatbakeloveintheUSA #besttimesofmylife
